Dan Aykroyd: Ghostbusters from Atari in 2009

Dan "I helped write the funniest movie in existence" Aykroyd, appeared on Dallas radio station 105.3 Tuesday morning to answer the burning question that haunts all of us as we lay sleeping, clutching our implements of war in a futile effort to divine that which must be known: will the Ghostbusters video game be released?

Happily, Aykroyd says yes. He indicates that the title will be published by Atari and that it will make its way through the door that swings both ways sometime next year (the 25th anniversary of the original film's release). Kotaku worries that he's just picked up on their earlier reporting and until there's official word from Atari this definitely falls under rumor.

The Ghostbusters title was originally slated to be released this month, but its future became uncertain in the wake of the Blizzard-Activision merger over the summer. Developer Sierra has always maintained that the title has not been canceled, but is only in need of a publisher. Has Dan Aykroyd just scooped Atari on making it official? Will Ghostbusters trump Duke Nukem Forever as the most anticipated video game title ever? Time, time and only time knows the answer.

Go out and buy/rent/watch Ghostbusters this Halloween, it'll make you feel better.
