Better sit down for this one Axe-heads. EA has recently launched the official website for their previously announced Godfather II game, and from the look of things, this title is set to bring the pain. The site's initial offerings include new smoldering screenshots, developer's video diaries, and official blog. The latest screenshots show off not only the expected sandbox play mechanics but also a peek at the "Don's View", the game's new, much-hyped strategy component.
Moving beyond the first game's go-here-do-this mission system, The Godfather II will require players to "think like a Don": managing their crime family's personnel and resources as they compete for control of the underworld. In order to reach Don-status this time around, players will need to assign associates to tasks that suit their specific skill-set (arson, demolitions, protection), allocate resources and assign muscle to grow and protect the family's businesses, and anticipate what their enemies will do next.
The first Godfather was a solid game, but ultimately a bit of a thin experience. If Godfather II can learn from those mistakes and deliver the goods with its new strategy elements, EA might just deliver the first title that really steers open-world gaming in a new direction. The Godfather II hits streets February 2009 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Oh, and be sure to check out the exclusive debut trailer if you missed the world premiere on GameTrailers TV.
